The Pacific Islands region has more endangered and threatened species per head of population than anywhere else on earth. Its national and international waters include the world's most extensive and diverse reefs, the largest tuna fishery, the deepest oceanic trenches and significant remaining populations of many globally threatened species including whales, turtles, dugongs and saltwater crocodiles. Its high islands support large blocks of intact rainforests, including many locally endemic species and communities of plants and animals

This regional workshop was held at the SBEC Training Room, Apia, Samoa, from July 13th to 24th, 1998. The eighteen participants who attended the workshop came from Palau, Cook Island, Tuvalu, Niue, Solomon Island, Vanuatu, Kiribati, Tonga, Kosrae, Pohnpei and Samoa. The opening remarks were given by the Officer-in-Charge of UNDP Mr. Richard Olver and the Director of SPREP, Mr Tamarii Tutangata and the keynote address and official opening by the Hon. Minister of Lands, Survey & Environment, Tuala Tagaloa Kerslake. The workshop was officially closed by the Chairman of the SBEC Board, H.E. Peter Hamilton and the certificates presented by Mr. François Martel, on behalf of SPREP.

This is a two week training workshop for 20 Conservation Area Projects (CAP) participants from throughout the Pacific islands region. The purpose of the workshop is to provide trainees with the skills to assist local communities and small operators in SPBCP-supported Conservation Areas to develop successful natural resource-based income-generating activities based on solid business principles.

This report is the Project Preparation Document for the proposed Uafato Conservation Area Project, in north-eastern Upolu. The primary objective of the PPD is to lay out the design for a project that conserves the unique biodiversity of the Uafato area. A secondary objective is to assist Uafato villagers to develop regimes for the sustainable management of local resources, especially the resources potentially threatened by over-utilisation, such as the forest timber resources.
