The natural environments of Pacific island countries and territories (PICTs) are under increasing pressure from development and growing human populations, and the social and economic pressures associated with this growth. Increased populations and urbanisation have led to increased product importation and waste generation.

On 15 January 2022, the Kingdom of Tonga was violently impacted by a volcanic eruption and tsunami that devastated the country. Despite the trauma the people and authorities of Tonga worked to clean up and recover the country as quickly as possible.
