The overflowing Jable-Batkan dumpsite in Majuro is the urgent problem for waste management faced in the RMI. This dumpsite has long exceeded its design capacity with waste now pushed up to 17m high against a seawall on the ocean side of the atoll. The priority for RMI is to reduced waste disposal at the dumpsite. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) seek to focus their PacWastePlus investment to introduce a programme to divert the largest two components of waste organics (17% and paper/cardboard (22%) from disposal and instead be processed to compost at an organic facility.

2021
There has been a continuous global concern regarding the disastrous impacts of climate change, sea level rise and climate related hazards. Scientific findings revealed that the global climate system is being adversely affected due to the accumulation of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) in the atmosphere. This has been scientifically proved to be caused by anthropogenic activities.

RMI Green Climate Fund Handbook: Summary for National Stakeholders
SPREP Publications, Climate Change Resilience
Available Online
2021
The Green Climate Fund (GCF) was established in 2010 and is now the world’s largest fund dedicated to the fight against climate change. Finance from the GCF can be used to support the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) to achieve a paradigm shift to low-carbon pathways and climate-resilient development. The GCF aims to achieve this by investing in transformative projects and programmes on climate adaptation and mitigation that contribute to national climate change policies and priorities. The RMI GCF Handbook has been prepared to provide clear, simplified and practical guidance for stakeholders to understand the GCF’s requirements for accessing resources to develop and implement climate change projects.
