Survey of reef invertebrate resources in the Republic of Nauru: May 2015

The people of Nauru are highly dependent on coastal resources for their food security, which has resulted in many invertebrate species being overharvested. Their decline is exacerbated by a lack of regulations to manage and control the impact of fishing. Local residents expressed the need for a status assessment and a request was made to the Pacific Community (SPC) to provide technical assistance. This report presents the findings of the resulting assessment, conducted in the Republic of Nauru in May 2015. The main objective of the work was to assess the population abundance and size structure of several key species, including turban snails (Turbo setosus and T. argyrostomus), belligerent rock shell (Reishia armigera), spiny rock lobster (Panulirus penicillatus) and species of interest to foreign markets, in particular sea cucumbers. Six survey methods were applied to suit the different coastal habitats of Nauru. These were reef benthos transects, reef front timed walks at night, manta tow, reef front timed swims in the daytime, lobster night searches (reef front timed swims at night) and deep-water timed scuba searches. Where possible, information from this assessment was compared with that collected during the PROCFish survey in 2005, to explore changes in resource status over time.

This Nauru country assessment provides key findings for Nauru that contributed to developing the comprehensive State of Conservation in Oceania 2013 report. This report assesses the overall state of conservation in Nauru using 16 indicators. The indicators provide information not only about the state of conservation in Nauru but also about what pressures and threats conservation in Nauru is facing and what action is being taken to halt further loss or degradation and improve its long-term sustainability. Each indicator aims to provide a measure of the current situation and indicate whether it is getting better or worse. Because the amount and quality of available information varies among indicators, a measure of confidence in the data is also provided.

Officials in Nauru taking action on asbestos safety

Nauru is taking action to improve the safety of asbestos removal work around the island, and now has 12 fully-trained officials to keep an eye on safety standards. The government has been removing asbestos from households since late last year, but there has been concern that workers were not being protected from dangerous asbestos fibres, and that the discarded material was not being disposed of properly. The safety training was delivered by SPREP's PacWaste project, and manager Stewart Williams says the Nauru government deserves credit for its efforts.

This document represents the Government of Nauru's response to the risks to sustainable development posed by climate change and disasters. It aims to do two things. First, it identifies immediate priorities relating to climate change adaptation (CCA) and disaster risk reduction (DRR), in order to clearly articulate these for all government ministries, state owned enterprises, the private sector, civil society, communities and development partners to engage with. These priorities are described in Section 4. Second, it provides a general framework for longer term planning and programming of CCA and DRR activities, including guidance on their mainstreaming in national and sectoral development policies. PacWaste (Pacific Hazardous Waste) is a four year, 7.85 million project funded by the European Union and implemented by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) to improve regional hazardous waste management, in 14 Pacific island countries plus Timor Leste, in the priority areas of healthcare waste, E-waste, asbestos, and integrated atoll solid waste management. Asbestos-containing wastes are a major issue for many Pacific Island countries with a history of use of asbestos-containing building materials in construction. All forms of asbestos are carcinogenic to humans and the inhalation of asbestos fibres that have become airborne can cause serious lung disease or cancers.
